Q-ster and one of his cousins learned to solder.

Travel Day

We flew to the midwest to visit SwingDaddy's family a couple of weeks ago.

Our guys are little troupers.

But even they get tired at the end of a long travel day.

What's Purple and Brown?

The boys have been enjoying taekwondo camp this week.  Q-ster just tested for his brown belt!

The kids line up to help each other lace up their chest protectors, with varying success.  Fortunately, the instructors jump in to assist the little ones.

Buster warms up with some burpees.  He's going to test for purple senior tomorrow!

Kick, kick, kick.

Travel Tips from the Pros

I've been collecting these travel articles for ages and just want to post them so I can find them later. I'm making a packing list for summer vacations, so it was the perfect time to review.

Penelope Trunk, as always, has some interesting and sharply worded thoughts on how you should try to maintain as much of a routine as usual, when you're on the road.

Ariana Huffington shares her thoughts.

This NY Times article about working mothers and business trips made me think, Really?  Is it really that hard?  Of course, my husband is a superhero, so that makes things easier for me.

Dan Pink has a whole series of travel tips.  This one is about avoiding sickness.

Booking a private tour guide can be an enlightening experience.

And now a whole bunch of packing lists.  This counts as fun for me!

The always awesome Digital Nomad, Andrew Evans. Camera and tech focused, since he photographs, blogs and tweets from the road for National Geographic. He just announced that he's going on sabbatical, so I'll have to dig into his archives.

Chookooloonks, also camera focused.

Chookooloonks again, this time camera and scuba gear.

The Unclutterer, pre-travel checklist

The Unclutterer, packing list.

And another packing list, from Wild Junket. More of a hard-core, long term traveler list.

Little Gladiator

Someone was exciting to try on his new taekwondo sparring gear tonight.  His big brother asks, "Hey, can I kick him in the head to try out the helmet?"

Dribble, Dribble, Swoosh

After seven hours of basketball camp each day this week, Q-ster's been asking to go outside in the evening and shoot more hoops.  Ok, kid.

Our foyer looks like a sporting goods store right now.  Q-ster's basketball shoes, 6 sets of soccer cleats (three from the neighbors and three of ours from previous years,) all kinds of taekwondo gear.  Fortunately, Buster can wear a set of Q-ster's almost-new but outgrown soccer shoes, and Q-ster can wear a set from our neighbors.  You know the drill - the kids have a one week camp and then the shoes are set aside, too small for the following year's camp.  Thank heavens we're getting more use by trading them around!

SwingDaddy is in charge of working out the mouth guard fittings from the TKD gear.  We never needed mouth guards in orchestra, so I don't have any experience with them.  The brass section never got that far out of hand.

Buster was quite pleased with the spaceship he built for himself out of foam blocks, chairs, and some electric train controllers.

He stopped to refuel, since the big engine in back uses a lot of energy.

Happy Father's Day!

Well, about as decadent as it gets.

Cinnamon roll waffles! Put the uncooked cinnamon roll on the waffle iron and squish.

Next time, we'll probably roll them a little flatter first, but they were tasty as is. Mmmmm.

Past and Present Piano

I grew up studying piano with the Suzuki method, and all the families took turns hosting the monthly recitals.  The boys' teacher arranges recitals at retirement homes, but this season, there were so many book graduations that she asked if anyone would like to host an extra recital.  We jumped at the chance.  My childhood piano has served so many Suzuki recitals, and now another generation!

I caught the boys giggling while practicing their duet.

The recital itself went nicely.   Duet first.

Buster performed his Book One graduation pieces.

Q-ster performed his Book Three graduation pieces.

And all the guests fit comfortably in our house.

Hooray!  And now we can take it a bit easier for summertime practice.

The Young Artists

We took some time in the evening to make Father's Day cards.  Buster drew SwingDaddy on his red bike and himself on a scooter.

Q-ster drew bike and Nerf components, carefully labeled.

Last Day of School

First day of school, back in August.

Last day of school, today.  Q-ster has finished third grade and Buster has finished kindergarten!

We played "What Time is It? (Summer Time!)" from High School Musical 2 in the car and picked up a treat dinner.  We ran a few errands (they insisted on carrying the packages,) and then went home to relax. Summer!

Juice and Mirrors

Lunch at the mall.  Jamba juice!

This is the scenario that plays out when two young bucks crash antlers. Or in this case, baseball cap brims.

Both managed to survive it.

And then mess around with three-panel mirrors while we waited for SwingDaddy to try on some jeans.

The zombie actor/dancers and me, messing around while waiting for our cue. Caption: An unsuspecting chorus girl is attacked by zombies!

We were popular photo requests backstage.

SwingDaddy and my parents brought the boys to see the show.  Good times!

Dress Rehearsal

I took a few photos during dress rehearsal.

It was fun to see the troupe show a piece that SwingDaddy and I choreographed and other numbers we used to perform.

We had a pretty good rehearsal too.

It's a good workout!

Tech Rehearsal

Dressed up and wigged up for our number.

Checking out the dance floor while the lighting crew tests effects for another number. I love the mysterious look.
