Chemistry Dude

Q-ster worked hard on his book report, covering a book on the elements. He's full of facts about carbon, oxygen, platinum, and copper these days.

Extra Energy

We made a visit to a grand local villa and let the boys and their cousin run like little mad creatures.

It was early and quiet, without many other patrons to disturb.  They had a great time.

In the Kitchen

First time making potstickers in ages!  Yum.

The unexpected bonus of the evening was the excitement of our fellow dinner guests when they discovered that we purchased the wrappers at the supermarket.  They had been planning to make theirs by hand, whew. We sat down and had a nice chat while wrapping them up together.

Four Hands

Adorably practicing their new duet.  Their piano teacher and I could hardly keep from giggling at lessons.

Their Own Show

The boys have been watching the YouTube channel of an enterprising pair of brothers who review Nerf toys and made a serial movie that spanned multiple years.  In the first episode, they're young teens.  By the conclusion, in part 20, the older brother is in college (studying filmmaking) and they can drive, making the locations more varied.

I came downstairs one morning to find Q-ster and Buster sitting side by side on the couch, delivering a review of their Nerf toys - good points, bad points, what they recommend, and concluding with "thank you for watching."

In other news, Buster is finally big enough to clamber to the top of the artichoke climbing structure in front of the library.  He's so excited!

National Day of the North

A year ago today, I was in the capital of my favorite Scandinavian country for their National Day.

The school children march through the city, bearing flags.  I don't think I've ever seen so many flags.

As a costumer, I was particularly happy to see people wearing national dress, representing the different regions of the country.

When people are wearing matching clothing, they are from the same part of the country, or even from the same family.

Those groups wearing outfits that don't match are often school friends who met at university in the capital.

Everyone was very happy to pose and show off their finery.

In this last image, I wasn't fast enough with my camera and missed the moment when the monks were posing with the girls and the soldiers were posing with the monks.

Beautiful day.  Gratulerer med dagen, syttende mai!

Giant Veggies

The plush armory was put aside briefly for me to sew a giant rutabaga for a theatrical project.  We'll see if it makes it into the show.

Water Curiosity

A cool spiral water feature at a nearby mall.  I'm guessing that it was turned off and usually the water comes out of the center, driving around the spiral and down the channel on the side.

Somebody decided to burrito-himself with the fuzzy, fuzzy alpaca rug.

A Place in the World

Buster brought home his kindergarten schoolwork, as usual, and this week there was a booklet about where the kids live.

This is a drawing of his bedroom, with bed, desk, windows, and his giant tiger stuffed animal in the middle of the floor.  The following pages included a picture of our house.

our city, then, California, the USA, and then a picture of the earth.  Cool!

Not quite, but almost totally unrelated: I volunteered in the classroom last week and my assignment was tracing a bunch of these giant caterpillars.  Cute!  Glad I didn't have to cut them out.

Les Miserables Evening

A couple of weeks ago, Q-ster, my dad, and I headed out to see the university's production of Les Miserables. There was to be an "opera-going experience" preceding the show, so we took the opportunity to dress up.  I wasn't able to convince Q-ster to wear his Enjolras vest, but he posed for me at home.

The pre-show was set in 1862, the year of the book's publishing, but I only have ballgowns from that era, plus hoops are a hassle in a modern theatre, so I went with the closest thing I had (1870's.)

It was such a fun evening and the production was very good.

The director (far left) was so pleased to see us in costume that she came up to greet us and pose for a picture!

SwingDaddy's folks are visiting, and the boys had a blast working on this new construction toy.

Buster took a moment to be silly.

Piano Time

The afternoon's activity - piano recital!
