Really, There are Other Things to Complain About

This falls into the category of Problems That are So First World that they almost defy explanation:

It costs $19 for new iPhone 5 "Lightning" recharging cable.
It costs $29 for an adapter to convert an existing cable to a Lightning connector.

iPhone 5 and iPad 3 should have come with a free lightning to the old type connector.

The wastefulness is so frustrating (this is why I haven't yet bought a new printer, even though the printer we have is barely usable with our current laptops. IT STILL WORKS! Kind of!)
