Was That Really the Luck of the Draw?

So You Think You Can Dance is hitting its stride for the season and there were some really terrific choreographies and performances tonight.

Clever, clever quickstep (which is often a disaster) for Vitolio and Karla, delightful Broadway for Evan and Randi, and Nappytabs’s hip hop literally chained Philip and Janine together. We loved the chain number, but due to the difficulty of the prop, the execution suffered. Assuming the dancers make it to the top ten, the number will look terrific on tour, after some more practice opportunities.

I’ve become quite fond of Melissa and Ade, and their pas de deux was great tonight, even if Ade’s turnout was imperfect when running around carrying Melissa over his head. I have to wonder though, what are the odds of the sole classical ballerina “randomly drawing” the one classical ballet piece this season?

Host Cat Deeley is blogging for Entertainment Weekly, so perhaps she’ll tell all.

(Photo of Melissa and Ade's latin dance from last week, since I don't see any ballet pix from this week yet.)

More non-sequitur theater: When I got home from work yesterday, I found Q-ster running around the living room playing "basketball" with imaginary friends Padme and Anakin while singing "Get'cha Head in the Game." A Star Wars/High School Musical mashup!

Sole classical ballerina “randomly drawing” the one classical ballet piece this season? Nah.

When they talked about having a pas de deux at the early part of the show, I was thinking it must be Melissa and Ade. I enjoy watching them more and more every week.

Yeah, I was thinking about that last week too. Mia's number was really good with Randi and Evan. I was wondering if she requested them specifically ie, if choreographers can do that.

I was wondering that too. Could it have been that if someone else had drawn that dance, they would have done it, but not en pointe?

When we were watching it here in Vegas, I decided the "coincidence" of it didn't bother me. The fact is that plenty of folks end up randomly choosing their own style and doing it well, and they did have a 1 in 7 chance. The bigger factor for me, though, was that in spite of the fact that Melissa could be en pointe, I liked Kaytee and Joshua's pas de deux last season better. :-P

By the way, I can't stop thinking, "Malaria!" every time Mary screams...

I agree with Lara. I liked Katee and Joshua's Pas de Deux better. The chorographers should have chosen something a little flashier if they were sticking to classical music. A la Maria Kochetkova (ballet superstar), go with the Spanish stuff: Don Quixote, etc.

Lara and 4th Breakfast - Katee and Will's pas de deux? I don't think I remember Katee and Joshua doing a ballet, but it's been a whole year . . .

Ack, you're right, M. It was Kaytee and Will. I forgot that she every danced with anyone other than Joshua. :-P

Also I can't spell her name right. My bad! Just ignore me and my comments. :-P

I was bothered by the ballet only because week after week they show people drawing from the hat. They should have had a disclaimer saying that this week they chose Melissa specifically for that dance. And then in all fairness, every pair should have been given their own style (obviously of ONE of the two dancers).
