Dancing Queens and Kings

For those of you who couldn’t care less about So You Think You Can Dance, there’s a baby pic further down in the post. For everyone else, let’s talk!

Last year, Nigel spent weeks hyping a dance between Cat and himself in the finale, which turned out to be a goofy animated bit of nonsense with photographs of their heads inserted on cartoons. Very disappointing. This year, I was impressed. The two-hour finale was packed with good stuff and didn’t feel like the usual endless stretching-out-of-suspense.

Once upon a time, Mary Murphy gave useful critiques, but this season, she deteriorated into a series of incoherent screams and overpraise of clearly substandard ballroom. She may not have fully redeemed herself tonight, but I’m so glad she did that Latin number with Dmitri. Despite the slow tempo, she showed she does indeed have a reason to be on this show.

Nigel danced a very entertaining tap routine with the youngsters from the Debbie Allen Academy, and as you would expect from someone used to live performance, he totally sold the number. It’s easy to make comments from the safety of the judges table, so I’ve got to really hand it to Nigel and Mary. They put it all on the line, in front of millions.

The highly weird Cirque du Soleil/Wade Robson collaboration had the iconic imagery you’d expect from Cirque (rabbit ears protruding from a coffin, anyone?) and the popping battle was a delight. The freaky winner doesn’t need to limit himself to dance performances, because he’d do well portraying an alien in a sequel to Men in Black.

Spoilers ahead, so stop reading if you haven’t seen the results.

I expected Courtney to go first, but I really thought Katee and Joshua would be the final pair. What a surprise! I loved all of the last three and would have been happy to see any of them win. Katee is by far the best technician, but Twitch was the best entertainer. Joshua combined strong presence with a lovable personality. I’m glad we’re going to get to see all of them in concert, so I don’t need to be sad the season is over.

How did your favorite dancer do?

I loved the finale too and agree--much better than last year's. I also thought that the final two would be Katee and Joshua (even though I love Twitch) and Joshua would win because Katee has (IMO) no personality.

It was great to see the reprised dances from earlier in the season, since I missed so many of those the first time around.

What great legs Mary Murphy has! I haven't watched the first hour yet, so I didn't see Nigel.

I thought it would be Katee and Joshua. I really like how humble Joshua is.

When I asked my husband if he wanted to go to the live tour show, he said not if Mary was going to be there screaming!

And me...I am taking either tap or hip hop this fall. They may not have enough adults for tap, so hip hop is my second choice. But I bet it's a great workout. My daughter is taking dance 1 (ballet, jazz, tap) and musical theater (dancing, singing, acting). She LOVES dance!

Hey, if Tabitha is a little white girl who can do hip hop, then so can I :)

I actually didn't watch the whole season but I fell in love with Twitch in the past few weeks. Katee is amazing and if it was on technique she was the winner hands down.

Everyone is always praise Wade Robson. I think his stuff is so weird!!!

I had expected Courtney to be last, and Katee to win. Katee was the only one who actually seemed to do everything perfectly (aside from Will, who was ridiculously voted off a few weeks ago). I'm thinking maybe she was actually second place, rather than third (as it seemed) since otherwise they wouldn't have had a chance to give her the "top girl" award. Of the final two guys, I figured it was kind of a toss up, since Joshua is the better overall dancer, but Twitch gets a lot of personality points. I would have been happy enough either way.

I'm glad Mary and Nigel danced. This was the first year I even realized he was actually a dancer, since they always introduce him as executive producer or whatever. Good to see his credentials. I liked the rabbit dance thing, too. And the popping contest, though I was sorry they had to make a battle out of it and vote Philip into the ground right there on stage.

I don't watch TV much and only just happened to see parts of last night's finale. All I can say is, I want Katee's butt.

Totally fought the whole Dancing fever...
BUT OH! That baby is TOO cute for words. You know, except the ones I just used.

Okay, I don't watch this, but I must say, it's nice to hear that the judges are showing why they are there, not just being there as possible has-beens.

I thought it would be Katee. I really liked Joshua, but I have to admit I was disappointed that Katee was cut particularly since she was in so many of the favorite number. My hubby and I are going to see the tour in October!
