Overcoming a Failed Girlhood

I didn't master most of the common cosmetic skills back in high school, when it seems like everyone else did. My mom picked most of my clothes (and to this day, outfits that she gives me are still the ones on which I get the most compliments). Eyeshadow and blush are still beyond me. I didn't pick up false eyelash technique until I hit my thirties, but I tell myself as consolation that I aced AP Calculus with the time I saved not being in front of the bathroom mirror. Costume Conspirator likes to point out that she mastered both math and makeup in her teens, but she was always an overachiever.

Today, I made a huge step. I successfully plucked not one, but two hairs from my eyebrow. No, I didn't manage to shape the whole eyebrow, but I made some progress towards girl-competence. You know how some people get crazy bedhead with hairs sticking in all directions? That was how my right eyebrow looked this morning, and I was sufficiently motivated to locate tweezers and go for it.

Waxing appointments are too expensive and time consuming to schedule often, but I guess the ungroomed look never bothered me that much until now. After all, I mostly work with techie guys who aren't on the forefront of fashion.

Does anyone want to come over and give me tweezing lessons?

Hi Lady M,

I can totally relate to this! I think it's hilarious that so many DL women say the same thing, that they didn't know how to put makeup on or put their hair in a bun until being in a performance group forced them to. My mom picked all my clothes, and she still buys me clothes, and her picks are always the ones that look good. She still does a way better makeup job on me than I can myself. I didn't attempt to pluck my eyebrows at all until age 25 (after Google-searching something like "how to pluck eyebrows" :D ), and I still need help!

By the way, I really liked your post on "My New Gown". It was so good, I didn't know what to comment on it.

If you'll pay for my flight...

beauty posts everywhere today, is it? My advice coming from someone with about 3 stray eyebrows hairs a couple times a year) is to go slow. Do a couple, go bakc tomorrow and see if you want to do more. Because sometimes, they just don't grow back!

I was a sports girl growing up. Blush? Eye shadow? ha hahahahaha

Although I can pluck my eyebrows using the 'hmmm, maybe that one should come out' approach. ;-)

go for a wax! they can wax them for you and then you can pluck to maintain the shape they create.

Like Dancing Dragon, I totally relate with you on this one! I was definitely one of those DL women. In fact, makeup for DL shows was a source of serious stress for me. By the end of my two years, I was at least able to get by with putting on lipstick and blush on my own. Anything else, I still need help on and I avoid it whenever possible! Makeup = blech.

Well, I had luck plucking a few more hairs. I do want to go back for another wax though. ;)
