Managing to Say No to NaBloPoMo

Izzy posted a "Blogging Declaration of Independence" today that's definitely worth a read. I started blogging to develop the discipline of writing something, even just a little thing, every day. It's also encouraged me to take more pictures, and I've enjoyed collecting those images and words through the last few months.

However, it's really easy to get sucked into reading lots and lots of blogs, since there are endlessly interesting writers out there, living interesting lives. Recent events have made me realize that I need to spend more time tending to real life, so while I'm still reading, writing, and commenting, I'm not spending as much time on it, and not every night.

Sunshine Scribe wrote about NaBloPoMo, National Blogging Post Month (inspired by National Novel Writing Month, which Lady O is going to tackle), where you commit to writing a post each day. Even though I already post daily and I'm looking forward to seeing what other bloggers produce, I've decided not to sign up for the project. Instead, I'm going to declare my independence. Short posts most days and longer ones a few times per week, whatever feels right for the day. Let's see how that goes.

I, too, loved Izzy's Declaration, and am a bit skeptical about NaBloPoMo. Do we really need to intensify the sense of obligation we bring to blogging? Do people really need a special month to motivate them to blog more? Is blogging more really a good thing (I usually strive, unsuccessfully, to blog less).

That is, I felt that way until I saw the Yoda button. Now I kinda want to sign up.

Thanks for this! I am saying "No" too, not least because I have two freelance writing jobs to work on next month anyway. I figured if I committed to NaBloPoMo I'd post crappy entries and what would be the point? I'm also a little worried about keeping up with all the ones who are participating!

Yoda says sign up you will.

But no, Yoda. I won't. I'm not interesting enough to post once a day. I'm hardly interesting enough to do twice a week.

I'm with you too. I don't need any extra pressure!

Nah, this blogging thing is for me and it's not work. I don't need that pressure, no thanks. And I only post when I have things to write about.

Thanks for the link and I'm glad the BDI resonated! I sincerely hope it somehow reaches to all corners of the blogosphere. We all need reminding from time to time that this is supposed to be, above all else, FUN!

Yeah, we think we're insane to be signing up for NaBloPoMo, actually. But I also kind of like the idea of a challenge related to something I enjoy - I have so many challenges in areas I DON'T enjoy, this felt like a good choice for us.

At the same time, I fully respect and sympathize with what you're saying. It makes a lot of sense.

No blogging obligation from me. Just want it to stay fun.
